About Waveform Intelligence

Listening comes first.

Waveform Intelligence Inc. was founded by Jeff Schmitt around a simple idea: digital audio should reproduce the recording without getting in the way of it.

The DigitalVinyl Player is designed for high-precision playback, rendering music at the resolution appropriate for the listener's hardware.

The .dvl format is intended as a sample-less archival format: a way of preserving the master recording as a continuous waveform representation rather than simply storing another sequence of samples.

The Medium Should Disappear

Every recording medium leaves something of itself behind.

Vinyl has dust, surface noise, groove wear, and the mechanical interaction of stylus and record. Magnetic tape has hiss, saturation, and its own physical characteristics. Digital systems have their own methods of representing and reproducing the original waveform.

Think of the recording as the view through a window.

The medium is the glass.

The more fingerprints, scratches, or imperfections on that glass, the more the medium calls attention to itself instead of what lies beyond it.

DigitalVinyl was created with a simple goal: make the glass as transparent as possible.

We don't add EQ, enhancement, remastering, or a house sound. If the master is warm, DigitalVinyl should sound warm. If it is bright, it should sound bright. The goal isn't to improve the recording.

The goal is to get out of its way.

We're an independent technology company, and we still believe some old-fashioned ideas are worth keeping: build carefully, listen critically, respect the customer, and let the product speak for itself.
