DIGITALVINYL

Questions & Answers

Do I need *.dvl files to play music?

No. DigitalVinyl Player also opens WAV/WAVE, FLAC, MP3, AIFF/AIF/AIFC, M4A, and DSF files. For playback, the Player temporarily converts these formats into DigitalVinyl’s continuous-waveform playback representation; it does not create a separate .dvl file. You do not need to convert your music collection to .dvl. The Player was designed to demonstrate the fidelity possible with DigitalVinyl. Its playback of these other formats is very close, though slightly less accurate than playback from a native .dvl file will be. M4A playback depends on the decoder available in Windows.

What is DigitalVinyl?

DigitalVinyl is an audio format and playback system designed to reproduce a master recording as faithfully as possible. Its .dvl format represents a continuous waveform rather than storing a conventional sequence of PCM samples.

What is a .dvl file?

It is DigitalVinyl’s sample-less archival audio format. The Player reconstructs the musical waveform from the file during playback.

Does DigitalVinyl change or enhance the sound?

No. It is not EQ, remastering, an exciter, or an enhancement effect. Its aim is to reproduce what is already in the recording, not to change it.

Are the meters accurate?

The meters strive for accuracy, but they are visualizations of playback rather than calibrated measurement instruments. Audio fidelity takes precedence over metering precision.

Do I need special hardware?

The Player runs on a 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 PC. A high-quality DAC is recommended; a DSD-capable DAC is needed for DSD output. Available playback modes depend on your audio device.

Does the DigitalVinyl Player support streaming?

Not yet. The DigitalVinyl Player currently supports playback of locally stored audio files. Streaming support is planned for a future release.

Can I try it before I buy it?

Yes. The free trial includes 50 plays, with no account or credit card required.

Does the paid version have a playback limit?

No, playback is unlimited once the license is installed.

Are MacOS and iPad versions available?

The MacOS Beta for the Intel chipset is available with 50 free plays. This release is unsigned and not notarized. An unsigned MacOS Alpha for Apple silicon (M-chip) is also available. Choose the build for your Mac’s chipset. The iPad version is coming soon.

Why does Windows warn me about the installer?

The current installer is not yet code-signed, so Windows may show a warning. Download it only from the official DigitalVinyl website. If you are unsure about a warning, contact support before installing.

What does “Ludicrous Fidelity” mean?

It is our name for the Player’s very high-resolution PCM and DSD output capabilities. The modes available to you depend on your DAC and the music you are playing.

Can I convert my own music to .dvl?

Not with the consumer Player. This purchase is for playback; it does not include a .dvl encoder or converter.

What is your refund policy?

All sales are final, and purchases are generally non-refundable. Waveform Intelligence Inc. may consider refund or replacement requests in exceptional or extenuating circumstances. See the Terms for the full policy.
